Yearly Archives: 2015

April 27, 2015

We always look forward to April as it is often one of the best fishing months of the year in Key West. This year has been a little different. The annual spring Sailfish bite was very brief, and unless we have a rapid change in conditions it will end up being a disapointment.  There was only about a week early in the month when the Sailfishing was good. A lack of consistent east current which prevented the formation of a color change and “tailing” conditions seems to be to blame. With the relative absence of Sails we have concentrated on reef fishing for Snapper and Grouper with pretty good results on many days as well as early season Dolphin fishing which has been productive about every other day. We finished in 6th place out of 32 boats in the recent Shell Key West Challenge Fishing Tournament.April 2015 SailRick's BlackApril SnapperPermitPermit IIApril DolphinShell Tournament

We’ve had great weather over the last 10 days and a great supply of live bait which has been conveniently located close to the Marina. All this has resulted in some pretty good days on the water, with a wonderful variety of fish for which Key West is justifiably famousKent's tripMarch 27March Tuna tooYT SailMarch AJMarch Mutton

Fishing has been fair but no better over the last several weeks. Strong gusty winds in the 20 knot range have hampered us on some days. On other days, very clear water and a lack of current has made for challenging conditions. By remaining flexable and trying everything during the course of the day, we have succeeded in putting a catch together on most days.two AJ'sfoggy CravalleJohn Cook's Blackforty pound kingCosgrove YT

Fishing has remained pretty solid during the last 10 days or so. Water temps continue to fall with the coldest weather of the winter. This has resulted in a slow down for some of the snapper fishing with both Mutton and Yellowtail showing signs of lethergy, but an uptick in the number of Grouper we are catching. King Mackerel are still around in good numbers. There are also a few Sailfish and Blackfin Tuna rounding out our catch.Nathan's Sailmid Feb rackRandall's BlackFeb BlackFeb Kings & Yellowtailanother Feb Black

Plenty of good fishing again since our last report. We have been enjoying a very consistent period of fishing action for the last several months and that trend continues with our latest report. King Mackerel, Dolphin, Yellowtail Snapper, Mutton Snapper, Black Grouper and Sailfish all biting during the last week.Dolphin & SnapperJim Hooker's GrouperFeb 1st DolphinFeb MuttonJim & Sally's Sails

January 24 2015

We have been maintaining a very busy fishing schedule over the last several weeks with the result that it has been hard to find time to post updated fishing reports. In general fishing remains strong with the majority of days producing solid catches, lots of action and satisfied clients. All the winter resident fish are present in good numbers. This includes King Mackerel, Yellowtail Snapper, Blackfin Tuna, Mutton Snapper, various Grouper species and Sailfish. Weather conditions often dictate what will bite best on any given day. For example, South East wind has produced several days of good Dolphin fishing even though it is technically off season for this species.Jan 15, 2015Jan 23 DolphinKingsenioritaKings & YT

It has been a memorable couple of weeks since our last fishing report was posted. Beautiful weather and consistently excellent fishing has been the norm! Perhaps most striking about our recent success has been the tremendous daily variety to our catches. The Key West area is famous for how many different types of fish can be caught in a single outing, and it has certainly been true lately!
